How Not to Apply for a Job

Yesterday, I posted a message on LinkedIn. I said that I’m looking for a few freelancers to whom I can refer projects. Sadly, the overwhelming majority of replies were truly lousy. So I thought it would be helpful if I shared a few job-searching tips:

1. If I say not to send me a message via LinkedIn and you send me a message via LinkedIn, don’t expect a reply.

2. Think of your email as a full-fledged cover letter; impress me. I’ll be looking at everything from your subject line to your tone to your credentials. Don’t just send a link and say, “For more info, view my website.”

3. Do you say “thanks”? If you’re not gracious, why should I be generous?

4. I’m looking for three types of freelancers: Those who do e-newsletters, media relations, and websites. It’s unlikely that you’re an expert in all three, so make it clear which one you specialize in. Don’t force me to guess.
