When it came to its contracts, Van Halen was known as a world-class stickler. The most famous example was the band’s M&M stipulation. Not only was a bowl of M&M’s required backstage; the brown ones also needed to be removed.
According to David Lee Roth, Van Halen’s lead singer, the request was deliberate: it helped to show whether a contract had been carefully read and, therefore, whether the band’s complex — and potentially dangerous — technical requirements were likely to have been met.
