Here’s a proposal I just submitted for a workshop based on the above list:
13 Techniques to Attract and Sustain Students’ Attention
Half the battle of teaching consists of sustaining your students’ attention. Here are 13 secrets to maximize their focus and participation.
One of the chief challenges for any teacher is to capture and then hold their students’ attention.
This is difficult not only because listening is hard, but also because you have to be more interesting than what’s on a student’s phone.
And yet, the best professors make it look easy. They know how to engage students in the learning process. They know how to maximize their agency. They know how to balance career goals and life lessons with grades.
I’ll walk through a series of highly visual slides, each of which will involve a question for the audience. I’ll poll people for their answers, invite comments, and call on individuals as appropriate.
As a result of attending this workshop, participants will learn a variety of strategies, including:
* How to make their classroom more interactive.
* How to make their notations on homework more participatory.
* How to create assignments that can’t be Googled, but which require original thought.
* How to continue the educational process outside of the classroom.
